I have been commissioned by British painter Hugo Grenville to make two short films.
Spending time getting to know Hugo, observing how he works and teaches, I became interested in how the paraphernalia, waste materials and objects in his studio created a certain atmosphere – a fantasy-like place in stark contrast to the urban landscape of East London, where he’d created a kind of stage set in the manner of Matisse. These aspects of the studio became a focal point for the camera. The first film, Romantic Vision, uses a blend of observational camerawork as well as formal interviewing. This is featured on Hugo’s website, and has been screened in several galleries, as well as at the East End Film Festival in 2012. Another film, ‘Hugo’s Summer School’ was a short piece highlighting Hugo’s particular take on teaching.
