Arts Beyond the Classroom was a partnership project with Jubilee Primary School and Lauriston Primary School in East London, where a group of pupils, together with members of their families, came together to explore London’s cultural venues, exhibitions and events. This was an initiative with A New Direction, an organisation works to ensure that children and young people get the most out of London’s extraordinary creative and cultural offer.
I worked with the award-winning production company Eelyn Lee Productions on a film that documented this project and was subsequently screened in Tate Modern. Unlike a purely observational documentary, participants made their own videos too, with parents interviewing children and vice versa. The project gave a glimpse of the alienation felt by so many Londoners towards what we call ‘the arts’, and hinted at the complex social, structural and cultural issues that lie beneath attempts to encourage engagement.
Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more, or would like me to develop a proposal for a project.
